About José and Herman
People camp in all sorts of ways. Some do the ultralight thing, some do the car camping thing, and some do the bushcraft/survival thing. There’s no right or wrong way to camp. Camplife is all about how you enjoy the outdoors. We, the Camplife Brothers, are all about exploring the different approaches to camplife. We are definitely not pros or experts at camping, backpacking, or bushcrafting. We are just a couple of old friends trying out new stuff and learning as we go.
Turns out we aren’t really brothers. Just a Chinese guy and a Mexican guy from Vancouver, Washington who have known each other since the 2nd grade. We got hooked on the outdoors during our first backpacking trip in the Columbia River Gorge when we were 16. We had absolutely no idea what we were doing. We slept in blankets, froze our butts off, and got lost in the first mile of the trip. Nowadays it’s still pretty much the same thing. We have a little bit better gear, a whole lot more experience but in reality, still have no idea what we are doing sometimes. We're not always sure if it's worth spending the money on fancy gear, or if we can get the same results and save some money along the way with other options. What we do know, is that people can learn from our mess ups, failures, and even a few things that we pretty much nail. That's what this site is all about. Letting folks know that even us two amateurs can do this stuff, mess up, and always still have fun.
José is all about that hammock life. He likes through hiking, long treks, and is always looking for the lightest gear he can get.
Herman is all about the campfire cooking. He likes cast iron, carbon steel, and is always looking for new ways to cook food over the fire.
We both love trying out new equipment and hand making our own gear to test in the woods. We sit in the Camplife Brothers workshop (a few square feet in Herman's garage) with two sewing machines side by side, enjoying a drink, gathering inspiration from youtube, and DIY'ing our way into things ranging from hammocks, tarps, underquilts, to knives, bucksaws and leather sheaths. A couple days later we take our gear and stress test it while camping, eating delicious food, and probably enjoying another delicious drink (they always taste better out in the woods!). In the end, we always find ourselves sitting around the fire discussing, arguing, and reviewing the gear we made or purchased.
And that’s how Camplife Brothers was born. Just two old friends making and trying out gear, arguing about it, and loving it. Join the conversation, get outside and just give it a shot. If we can do it, you can definitely do it! So come along on this adventure into the outdoors. Join the Camplife Brotherhood and Sisterhood and EXPLORE your CAMPLIFE.
