RTIC 10 oz Stainless Steel Tumbler
The big question is, “Is it worth it to bring a double-walled insulated tumbler camping?” They are added weight, and take up space. You can always just drink your coffee out of the pot, or you could just bring a titanium cup to save weight. Why bother with a special mug for coffee?
How do you measure the importance of your gear? Where should you splurge when it comes to price, weight, and volume? For some pieces of gear, the bare minimum will do just fine, and with other pieces of gear a little more weight is worth it. One way I determine whether a little more weight is worth it, I ask the question, “How often is it in my hands?” If it’s in my hands a lot when I am in the woods, then I’ll splurge a little bit when it comes to price, weight, or volume. I usually have one of these things in my hands 80% of the time I’m out in the woods.
An insulated mug keeps your coffee hot. If you expend all that energy, time, and fuel trying to heat up your coffee over the fire, why would you go and waste it by pouring your coffee into a non insulated cup that just cools it down in minutes? Throw away your cute enamel camp cup and spend the $10-$15 on an insulated tumbler. If you are going to take the time to heat your coffee, you mind as well try to keep it warm with an insulated tumbler. While everyone is sitting around the fire trying to gulp their lukewarm coffee before it gets too cold, you can sit and relax with your hot insulated tumbler and sip at your leisure with no worry of your coffee cooling for hours.

Perfect size
Why the 10 oz tumbler? 10 ounces is an uncommon, but also very convenient size for a camp cup. It’s exceptionally short and squatty, making it a nearly untippable mug, This compact tumbler is such a pleasure to hold, you’ll feel like Don Draper in Mad Men with a lowball of bourbon in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

It is the same diameter as a small isobutane canister. So if you have a pot or vessel that nests with the standard isobutane canister, these 10 ounce tumblers will like nest with it too. I use the Stanley Adventure cookset, and the 10 ounce stainless steel tumbler slides into the Stanley Pot perfectly. Getting things to nest is my favorite.
Stays hot
I’ve found that the less air you have in an insulated mug, the hotter it stays. So with a 24 ounce insulated tumbler, if you want to keep it hotter, you’re going to need to fill it with 24 ounces of fluid. 24 ounces of coffee or even 16 ounces is a bit much to drink in one sitting for me. By the time I drink 8 ounces, the rest of the 8 ounces will be cool before I can even finish it. The small 10 ounce size means my coffee stays hotter for longer.
Don’t get the flippy cap
With no moving parts and no taper to the cup, this is just about the easiest thing to clean. No reaching with your hands to clean the bottom and no assembly and disassembly of parts for cleaning. No hinges for gunk to hide in. It’s as simple as rinsing the cap and the cup. Drinking coffee is a one handed affair. No moving parts, no buttons to push or caps to turn, all you do is pick it up and drink. Simplicity.

You can find one of these with a flippy cap, but don’t get it, it serves no purpose. They are like book sleeves... they just get in the way. The cap isn’t secure enough for you to toss the tumbler in your bag, so it doesn’t prevent spillage the way you would want it. All it does is make drinking coffee a two handed affair, and it makes the cup harder to clean with more crevices for milk gunk to hide in.
You’re a grown up, keep it simple, no need for a fancy flip cap.
Ubiquity
There’s a couple dozen different varieties of 10 oz stainless steel double-walled tumblers on Amazon. So far I’ve purchased three different ones. They are all exactly the same when it comes to insulation and size. The lids and branding differ a little bit, but I’d recommend about any of them. I’ll put some links to some that I recommend. I couldn’t find the exact design of the one pictured in this post, but I’ve used other brands, and they all work great. Unless you get a flippy cap/splash cap one. Those suck. Check the list below for the camplifebros approved tumblers.

Conclusion
If you’re drinking your coffee out the iconic but completely terrible enamel mugs you find at big box stores, just stop, and start bringing an insulated mug instead. You can really bring any insulated mug you have lying around in your cupboard, but the 10 oz double walled stainless steel lowball tumbler is classy, functional, and about as sleek as it gets when it comes to double walled mugs. Splurge on this, you will not regret it.
